Liz Engel Clark
Thursday, Aug 21, 2014

UPPER CUMBERLAND – Unemployment was up almost across the board in the Upper Cumberland in July. Thirteen of the region's 14 counties saw increases from June.

Overton was the lone exception. Its rate of 8.2 percent was a 0.1 percentage point less than the previous month. Elsewhere, increases ranged from 1.3 percentage points in Fentress (9.3) and 0.9 percentage points in Smith (0.9) to 0.1 percentage points in Clay (9.4) and Jackson (8.9).

Both Pickett (11.2) and Van Buren (11.1) were in double digits, although rates in those counties have improved year-over-year by a full percentage point or more. Rounding out the rest of the region were Cannon (7.4), DeKalb (7.4), Macon (7.7), Putnam (7.8), Cumberland (8.8), Jackson (8.9), Warren (8.9) and White (9.5).

Tennessee’s non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for July was 7.8 percent, up 0.4 percentage points from June. The national unemployment, as a comparison, was 6.5 percent, an increase of 0.2 percentage points from the previous month.
