Cookeville Regional adds pediatric department

Wednesday, Aug 31, 2011

A mural is painted at the new wing of the pediatrics department at Cookeville Regional.

The administration at Cookeville Regional Medical Center has authorized the development of an addition of a five-bed pediatrics unit on the hospital's 5 East Wing. The unit will have a $30,000 security system, child-friendly rooms with murals, sofa beds for caregivers who wish to spend the night and other amenities. Total cost of the renovation is $67,000, which The Foundation is trying to raise in support for this project.

Art students from Tennessee Tech, along with other local artists, have been working on the murals in the various rooms with themes of zoos, oceans, castles, farms, planets, etc. Artists include Kari Garrett, Cephas Ablakwa, Ranchel Franklin, Salee Adkisson, Bethany Pinzur, Brock Write, Dana Honeycutt and Brooklyn Darty.

The Foundation exists as an independent organization exclusively to benefit the mission of Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Under the leadership of Board President David Horner, Foundation board members set policy, develop operational guidelines and procedures and assist in establishing specific objectives as they relate to The Foundation’s primary purpose – to raise funds that will assist the hospital in three major ways: support of patient assistance programs, equipment and furnishings for the hospital, development of a permanent endowment program.

Two additional volunteer organizations are in place to support the Foundation. Under the leadership of John Story, The Foundation has a 24-member Community Fundraiser Committee, and under the leadership of Op Walker, director of the hospital pharmacy, a 30-member Foundation Advisory Committee has been organized. This group lends support to the Foundation board on an as-needed basis as time permits.

Individuals and businesses wishing to support the new Pediatrics Unit with a financial gift may contact The Foundation office at (931) 783-2003. Naming opportunities are available.

Groups needing a program for their organization through the Foundation or individuals seeking additional information on ways they can support the Foundation may contact Gary Curto, executive director, at (931) 783-2003, or visit our website at
